“Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
(Zechariah 9:9b)
Imagine you were a king and had been given the authority to save all mankind… what are the chances you would be humble, too? That kind of power doesn’t normally pair well with humility.
But it does in Jesus. Jesus, as King and Savior, entered Jerusalem mounted on a donkey. He sets us a pretty clear example – God values humility in His leaders.
He who would be first, must be last and servant of all. That’s the message of Jesus on the colt. Jesus didn’t seek honor, yet the Father honored His name above every other name.
Those who wish to be godly leaders in the church, in their homes, and in their communities need to heed this example. Don’t be corrupted by power and authority’s glitter and shine. Get in the trenches and serve.
If you are an elder – don’t lord it over the flock. People are hurting and growing all the time.
If you are a father – don’t exasperate your children and terrorize them with your position.
If you lead in a business capacity – treat those beneath you with respect and remember you also have a Master.
Christ-like leadership looks a lot more like riding on a donkey than it does riding in a chariot.
