“When will the new moon be over, so that we may sell grain, and the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market?” (Amos 8:4)
In Amos’ day, Israel began to view the Sabbath as an irritating responsibility instead of a blessing. Worship was no longer a privilege, but a form of bondage keeping them from doing what they really wanted to be doing.
How do we view worship and Bible classes? Do we want to be there or do we come in late and leave as early as we can? Are we excited to gather with God’s people or simply fulfilling an obligation that is required of us? Make no mistake, it is better to go through obligation, than not at all… but such a feeling should be recognized as a season of weakness in our faith, not the standard we shoot for. Instead of drudgery and watching the clock, the goal should be joy with anticipation.
What a privilege it is that we can spend time in worship with the saints!
