“…but I did not do so because of the fear of God.”
Nehemiah 5:15b
When Nehemiah refrained from taxing the people in order to pay his salary as governor, it was purely because of his reverence for God. He could have done it, but he knew it was better to restrain his freedom for the sake of God’s people.
There will be times in your life when the only reason you have for doing the right thing is knowing that God will know. A wise man recognizes that God sees everything and will reward the righteous for his righteous deeds done in secret and will punish the wicked for their hidden evils.
Maturity in Christ can be measured in our unseen actions. Do we do the right thing when no one else will know? Do we hold ourselves accountable even when there are no consequences? Do we keep our word even when doing so is to our own harm?
When only God sees you, who does He see?
