“A sated man loathes honey, but to a famished man any bitter thing is sweet.” (Proverbs 27:7)
Scarcity breeds gratitude. It is only when we face discomfort that we begin to value what we have. Water tastes better after exercise. Our own soft bed feels like luxury after a camping trip.
Perhaps the reason we aren’t happy is because we are so busy acquiring more that we don’t learn the joy of having less. Wants aren’t the same as needs. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that Jesus said it is “more blessed to give than receive”?
We’d probably be amazed at how little our happiness is dependent on what we have.
