“The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. And men will say, ‘Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth!’ ” (Ps 58:10-11)
Verses like this one are tough because they seem counter-intuitive to the Bible teachings to love our enemies and show compassion and mercy. So, let’s take a moment to put this in context.
God is the one delivering vengeance to the wicked in this passage and the righteous are rejoicing that God has protected them and rewarded them for their steadfast trust in Him.
Because Jehovah is a just God, Christians don’t have to worry about making their own justice or taking their own vengeance. We can live a life of love, mercy, and compassion because God judges the earth.
“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay’, says the Lord.” (Rom 12:19)
