“Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4)
This verse is quoted three times in the New Testament (Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11, & Hebrews 10:37), but the original call to live by faith is from Habakkuk, not the New Testament writers.
Habakkuk, when confronted with the terrifying fate of his beloved country at the hands of Babylon, recognized that God was still in control. Isn’t that a novel thought?
We want God to be wiser than us, but we struggle when He makes decisions differently than we would. Maybe the problem is pride…
The proud person doesn’t have faith in God to work out all the details. Ego gets in the way of submitting to God’s wiser plan.
Habakkuk didn’t like the plan, but he realized if it was God’s plan it was still better than his.
Want to know what it looks like to be righteous in an unrighteous world? Habakkuk tells us – live by faith. Trust more, worry less.
