“What profit is the idol when its maker has carved it, or an image, a teacher of falsehood? For its maker trusts in his own handiwork when he fashions speechless idols.” (Habakkuk 2:18)
Don’t settle for tiny gods. You want a God bigger than you. When we make the idols, the idols are always inferior – our handiwork, our limitations.
What good is a god that can’t think clearer, feel deeper, or work harder than you? What good is a god that can’t love you? Tiny gods are great when we want control… but what about when life is out of control?
Then we need the B-I-G God. The one and only living God who loves us with the type of love that only can be seen at the cross.
When life is crazy and hard and scary – that’s when we remember why the tiny gods aren’t any good. Only the Great I AM will suffice when we need answers and hope. Tiny gods can’t tell us what we need to hear, they only parrot what we want them to say.
Hard times show us how small the gods of our own handiwork are. Hard times make us look up – and if that is the only lesson you learned this year, it was all worth it.
