“And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, and the end of it will be like a bitter day.” (Amos 8:10)
When Amos prophesied the destruction of Israel and the Assyrian captivity that was to follow, He compared the impending calamity to the death of a family’s only son.
One can’t help but think about the day that would come 750 years later when God gave His only begotten Son to bring life to us all. That our Father would endure such mourning and the bitterness of such a day is hard to comprehend. Israel suffered for their own sins, Jehovah and Jesus suffered for ours.
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was on Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
