“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights.” (Isaiah 42:1)
The gospel of Matthew makes it clear that this verse is referring to Jesus (see Matthew 12:18-21). Several things should stand out from this passage that are of interest to the avid Bible student.
- God has a soul. When we consider ourselves made in the image of God – this is what it is referring to. God is spirit and our spirit is made like His (see John 4:24)
- Jesus brought delight to God’s soul. When the Father watched Jesus live and move amongst mankind it charmed His heart and brought Him pleasure and satisfaction. It is possible to delight the Creator of heaven and earth, and to consider that we as humans, as we imitate Christ, might bring Him a moment of rapture is thrilling and humbling.
- Jesus was considered a Servant, and that title was not demeaning, but glorifying. To serve the Lord of Hosts is a position of both submission and honor. We should never fear submission as demeaning – only small people fear humility.
- Jesus was upheld by the Father. Jesus provides us a model that serving God means we know longer need to be worried about how things will work out. The God-fearing man, need not fear falling. Our fate is in His hands, and there is no more secure position.
