“For the Levites were more conscientious to consecrate themselves than the priests.” (2 Chronicles 29:34)
To be conscientious is the act of wishing to do what is right, especially to do one’s work or duty well and thoroughly. When Hezekiah commanded the priests and the Levites to prepare for the reopening of the temple – the Levites took the job seriously and the priests, shamefully, did not.
The old adage that ‘anything worth doing, is worth doing well’ holds well under biblical scrutiny. We should ask ourselves if we are conscientious Christians, especially in times like these when our faith is so tested and placed under the scrutiny of our irreligious friends and neighbors.
We cannot afford to be sloppy in our faith. We must seek excellence in our service of the King and strive to do well what takes we have been given. Our salvation ought not to be pursued with half-measures. Only our finest effort is appropriate for our calling.
