The Commercialization of Christ

“ ‘Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Behold, I even I have seen it,” declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 7:11)

When Jesus overturned the tables of the moneychangers and decried the greed and corruption of the religious leaders – it was Jeremiah He quoted.

The moral of the story?  Every generation has faced this sort of religious villain: the preacher who preaches for money.  In Jesus’ day it was Sadduccees and priests with long robes.  Today it looks like televangelists and perfectly-coiffed megachurch pastors.  Different times, but the same message.  The lies of the prosperity gospel are nothing new.  Celebrity religion isn’t true just because it is glitzy and popular.

We cannot buy the lies.  The truth can’t be sold, and faith is about how deep your trust is, not how deep your pockets are.  Paul said he wasn’t peddling the gospel like a merchant, and neither should we.  The Scriptures are the free message of life for all. True Christians need to stand up against the commercialization of Christianity.  When religion becomes a marketplace, then the robbers are running the churches.

Don’t let money get in the way of the message. The truth is always free.  Simple Christianity needs no additional fees.
