“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” (Pr 13:22)
Two principles are at play in this Proverb.
- It is good to save for your children (and even your grandchildren!). Good stewardship of our finances is pleasing to God and shows character. A righteous man understands money is a tool to help people, not an end unto itself.
- Contrary to popular mythology, wickedness rarely leads to sustained wealth and a legacy of financial well-being. Nobody wants to keep doing business with someone who cheats them and has no integrity. A man that gains wealth by sin won’t keep it because he doesn’t have the selfless character to manage it long-term.
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
