“Now when Daniel knew that the document was signed, he entered his house (now in his roof chamber, he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously.” (Daniel 6:10)
There is something so refreshing about Daniel. He wasn’t an insurrectionist or a flagrant rebel. Daniel prayed for Babylon, served Babylon, and did his best to provide good counsel and leadership to whatever administration he was under. Nebuchadnezzar, Darius, and Belshazzar were all recipients of Daniel’s faithful service.
Yet, Daniel also served a higher authority. Indeed, Daniel’s service to each of those kings was predicated on his submission to the Great King. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego all knew that the authority of men ended where it directly conflicted with the authority of God.
So, Daniel did not flaunt his “rebellion”, but neither did he stop. When Darius’ edict on worship was signed, Daniel just calmly continued to live by the convictions he had always had. He continued “as he had done previously”.
Make me like Daniel.
