“I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not in himself, nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.” (Jeremiah 10:23)
If left without signs and markers, every hiker would get lost. A forest is an easy place to get turned around in and many a lost hiker was convinced he was going the right direction even while he walked in giant circles.
Feeling right and being right are different things. The most dangerous decision is the one we make with passion, but without guidance.
The Scriptures are the compass for us wayfaring strangers down here. If you feel lost, that’s okay… God sent His Son to bring you home. Sometimes we need to stop trying to do things our way and stop and listen to the King. He speaks to us through the Scriptures and they are the words of life. There is a reason Jesus is called ‘the Way’ (see John 14:6), and Paul said he wasn’t ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God to save (see Romans 1:16).
Confused by life and how us humans can get it wrong so often? We’re all a bunch of lost hikers; that’s why!
We need a Shepherd to bring us home, and that’s just exactly what God is offering. Peter had it right when he turned to Jesus and said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)
