“For who has despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10a)
God counts the very hairs on our heads… we often forget people until they have something we need.
Jesus is impressed with the widow’s two mites… we pay attention to the Fortune 500’s of the world.
Jesus recognized that the woman had “done what she could” when she anointed Him with oil… we often fail to notice people in the church that aren’t in the pulpit doing the “big” stuff.
When God told Zerubbabel not to despise the day of small things, He was reminded him that everything we do is small to God, but God cares about that stuff! Just get up every morning and do your best. Do the kind deed right in front of you, no matter how insignificant. Sometimes getting up in the morning and trying is big small stuff! Don’t worry about how impactful it is – God has a way of making small people play a big part in His plans if they will let Him.
Zerubbabel was a small player in a big plan and God used him to do great things. Don’t bury your talent because you are afraid it is too small to do anything. Do something, and then do the next something, and then the next, etc.
Don’t despise the day of the small acts of godliness – many times those are the ones that matter the most. Things like telling your spouse you love them, opening the door for others, reading to your kids, praying for a brother or sister in their time of trial, reading a chapter of Scripture, and working hard for your employer because you have a Master in heaven… these are small things, but they matter BIG time.
