“the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.”
Ezekiel 18:20b
What if we started thinking about our behavior the same way we do getting a tattoo? You don’t inherit tattoos from your ancestors, nobody can give you theirs, but once you get it, it’s permanent.
Ezekiel tells us our choices are the same way. Your righteousness is yours and so is your wickedness. Once you do it, you wear it. We wouldn’t recommend someone get a tattoo impulsively because of the long-term effects… yet how often do we sin impulsively?
Righteousness wears well over time – it is a choice we feel better about the longer we get away from the decision. Sin is a bad tattoo choice – seemed fun at the time, but regret-filled for the next decade we have to look at it in the mirror.
No one can live your life for you – it is yours to make your mark however you choose. Choose the ink wisely.
