“from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”
(Acts 1:25b)
When Peter said Judas had gone “to his own place” that is a gentle way of saying ‘hell’. Judas was dead, not in Tahiti. Judas betrayed Jesus, never repented, and then killed himself. He lived lost and he died lost.
We don’t like to talk about hell, but that doesn’t make it any less real. Furthermore, there is a danger in ignoring the fiery flames of eternal damnation – if we ignore it, we might just stop putting the effort in to avoid it. Ignoring it can breed complacency.
You don’t want to go to hell – it may be our own place, but it is no place you want to be. It is our own because we are alone without God, without joy, without hope, and without any blessings. It is darkness because God’s light never shines there, it is fiery torments because that’s what life is like without “Him from whom all blessings flow”.
Never forget the Judas lesson. A life without Jesus has consequences.
