“The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.” (Nahum 1:3)
The book of Nahum is written to Nineveh – the same Nineveh that repented at the preaching of Jonah. The same Nineveh that God defended against Jonah’s tantrums. God loved Nineveh and they were people to Him, not just numbers.
And so, from Jonah to the days of Nahum (about 100 years), God watched the city return to wickedness. He gave them time to change; He gave them opportunities to remember the call to repentance Jonah warned them with.
He was slow to anger, but eventually, He had no choice. Our God loves to forgive, but He won’t neglect justice. Truth and goodness matter to Him as much as people do.
