“Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.” (Isaiah 13:6)
The Old Testament prophets are good reminders that historically the phrase ‘day of the LORD’ has brought with it terror and fear. ‘Day of the Lord’ refers to any day in which God visits mankind and brings His judgment with it. Since the gate is wide that leads to destruction (see Matthew 7:13), the vast majority of mankind has found the day of the LORD to be a terrifying one.
If we are not ready to meet God, the day He comes is a day of sorrow and regret. We’ve wasted the opportunity to prepare and are now only able to look with dismay upon the fate that we’ve chosen by default.
Yet, for the child of God, the ‘day of the LORD’ is a good thing. Our Father is settling the issue and we can have confidence that any judgment from Him will be sound and life-bringing. To the Christian, “God is in control” is a comforting thought.
To the lost, “God is in control” is a terrifying proposition.
