“… and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.”
(Mark 1:34b)
The demon-possessed were some of the first to recognize Jesus for who He was. They saw what the average man missed. The Jews saw a carpenter from the town of Nazareth. The demons saw the Son of God wielding the power of angelic armies. They feared Him while others dared mock Him.
The demons begged Him for mercy. They knew who He really was. I wonder sometimes if we ought to dwell on that fact more often. Those familiar with spiritual realm tread carefully when in the presence of that humble carpenter from Galilee. Yet, we use His name as a curse word or exclamation. The demons feared what Jesus would say, while we often put words in His mouth and attempt to speak for Him as if He were some puppet philosopher we can mold to our desires.
James spoke truth and a warning when he reminds us that, “the demons believe and shudder”. Would we live as we are right now if we knew the Jesus the demons saw? Or would we change a thing or two about our life?
