“Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
(Mark 1:41)
Jesus didn’t just feel compassion – He was moved by it. Compassion should compel us to action whenever possible. There are many things in life you cannot help – but I fear there are many times that I could have helped but didn’t move.
Jesus touched a leper – I don’t think I would want to do that. Leprosy is gross and sickness is uncomfortable to be around. Yet, Jesus moved anyways. Compassion should overpower our sense of discomfort. Compassion means having the conversation that might be awkward because it is necessary or comforting the hurting even though you are anxious about saying the wrong thing.
Jesus’ compassion also moved Him to be inconvenience. This leprosy man was in Jesus’ way. He had places to go and things to do, but He took the time anyways. Being busy is apparently not an acceptable excuse. I don’t think I’m busier than Jesus! Nor do I have more important things to do than He did.
If compassion could move Jesus, it probably should move us, too.
