Chastened for Our Well-Being

“But He was pierced through for our transgressions.  He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

We need look no further than the cross to understand the gravity of sin.  Every wicked deed and thought you or I have ever committed fell upon Jesus that day.  The horrific mutilation of His body that disfigured Him in the sight of all who stared at Him upon Calvary is a reminder of exactly what we would look like if our sins were truly unveiled publicly.

How many would turn in horror if they knew the darkest thoughts you’ve ever held?  How ashamed would we be if we had to admit our deepest sins and failings publicly?  We need Jesus.

He received the chastening we deserved.  Our sins and punishment were born upon His shoulders so that we could be redeemed and so we could see how ugly sin truly is.

May we only press forward and never crucify Him afresh.

“… seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”

(Hebrews 6:6)
