Character Before Power

“But I am very angry with the nations who are at ease; for while I was only a little angry, they furthered the disaster.”

(Zechariah 1:15)

God was angry with Israel, so He allowed them to be conquered by the surrounding nations… but then those nations got drunk on the power and committed merciless violence when the opportunity presented itself.

The problem with power and vengeance is that we tend to go overboard.  Power has a corrupted influence that accentuates every character flaw we have – so be careful when you are in a position of dominance.  Authority is likely to test who you are more than any other role in your life.

Husbands, parents, bosses, leaders in the church, and even the small situations in life where you have the upper-hand due to circumstance, finances, or popularity are dangerous roles that the devil exploits.  Remember that power isn’t the thing to attain; character is.

The world doesn’t need more leaders, it needs more integrity.  Leadership should be a natural symptom of a godly person’s influence rising them to a position of honor, not a thing to be striven for as an end unto itself.  Be good, and then lead.  Don’t lead until you are ready for the tests that such power brings.
