“Then the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for she was deeply stirred over her son and said, ‘Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him.” But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide!’ ” (1 Kings 3:26)
1st Kings 3 tells the infamous story of two women both claiming to be the mother of the same child and Solomon’s show of wisdom in revealing the true mother by saying he will use a sword to divide the child between both parties. The above verse is each woman’s response. Is there any doubt who the true mother is?
The verse illustrates love in the purest of forms – it is about doing what is in the best interest of the person, regardless of what it costs you. This woman was willing to lose her child in order that the child might live. She was willing to sacrifice all of her rights and benefits of motherhood so the baby could live as full a life as possible. She instinctively declared a sacrifice of all that she desired. That is love.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (Jhn 3:16)
